Neuro note 3
I watched the interview done by PeopleTv titled "Groom Paralyzed Playing Football Walks Down The Aisle: Inside Chris Norton's Story"
In this story, Chris Norton tells his personal story of how he endured a spinal cord injury as a collegiate football player. Chris fractured his spine at the C3/C4 level. We have learned so far in this class that this level of spinal injury is the worst and normally results in Quadriplegia from the neck down. In the most serious cases, a C3/C4 injury results in paralysis in the arms, hands, torso, and legs. Some individuals require a ventilator for breathing as well as difficulty controlling the bladder. Chris's doctor told him that he had a 3% chance of ever walking or having normal function again. Despite this devastating news, Chris set his mind to proving this doctor wrong. He set a goal to walk across the stage at his college graduation as well as walking down the aisle with his wife at their wedding. Chris worked extremely hard in therapy and on his own time to be able to accomplish these goals. This was such an inspirational story to watch as a future occupational therapist. Chris's story was an example that hard work and determination can get you a long way. As an OT, I want to be the light in the life of my clients like Chris. I realize how important it is to be motivational and I want to always make sure that I give my clients my full 100% to help reach his/her goals.
