Pediatric setting

As an OT practitioner, I can see myself working in many different areas of practice. However, I have always had a dream of working in pediatrics. When I was first introduced to OT, it was in a pediatric setting and since then I knew that was what I wanted to do. I have a passion for working/ volunteering with kids that have special needs. I know that working with these kids is a job that is not for everyone so I feel that I should pursue my passion and choose that path as an occupational therapist. In pediatrics however, OT practitioners may work with children that are mainstreamed and do not always have a disability or impairment. I personally do not care if I work in outpatient, homes, or schools.

I learned throughout the reading and in class today that schools and some other pediatric settings are considered as "social" settings. Because of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, OT practitioners are permitted to work in school systems to help children be engaged in their education. OT services can be considered public agencies ( schools), private - non profit (St. Jude), or private- for profit ( third party outpatient clinic).
